THE DRAGONS is administered by a Board of Directors consisting of our own members who serve on three-year terms. Many members not currently serving as directors also contribute their time and talents on our committees (see sidebar). Volunteerism and community service are founding values for the Dragons, and we are grateful for the contributions made by our directors and committee members.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHIES
MARTIN CHANG is in his second year on the Board of Directors, and serves as the Club's treasurer and a co-tournament director. A relative newcomer to golf, picking his first club up in the mid-90's. Growing up in the Midwest, Martin's school activities didn't include golf, but rather swimming and accompanying fun of how to keep your hair from freezing on the walk from the pool to school. Over the last three years, Martin has started to take golf more seriously (though you wouldn't know from his index), and enjoys the personal challenge the game offers. When not golfing, Martin enjoys spending time with his wife, Anne, and their two dogs, Chloe and Maya. For cardio vascular health, he also tries to get on his bicycle a few times a week, recently acquiring a vintage (steel) Colnago frame. On weekdays, Martin can be found in Emeryville where he works for a small pharmaceutical company.
ALEX CHONG begins his third year as a director and the Handicap Chairperson. He is also a co-tournament director, preparing pairings and conducting our net skins games. Like his brother Wes, Alex attended El Camino and has played for years in the Federation with the Good Guys. His favorite golf course is Coyote Moon in Truckee, and his career low round is a 79 at Blue Rock (East Course). Alex has served in every office with the Good Guys, and is currently in his first year as Vice President - Tournaments. Alex resides in the City and works for the Port of San Francisco.
WESLEY CHONG is in his 3rd year on the Board and serves as the Club Captain. Prior to the creation of the Dragons Golf Club, Wesley was President of the Good Guys Chinese Golf Club for over 10 years and is currently the First VP for the Chinese Golf Federation. Wesley was first introduced to golf as a young 7 year old boy, accompanying his father to the driving range. Although playing on the El Camino High School golf team, Wesley didn't become serious until after graduation, playing at Green Hills Country Club, entering NCGA Amateur golf tournaments and joining the Good Guys Chinese Golf Club in 1984. Wesley was a key contributor to the transformation of the former Good Guys Chinese Golf Club to the current Dragons Golf Club. He even won the inaugural "Dragon's Cup" award in 2009. When he's not on the course, he finds as much quality time to spend with his child and wife, Mari.
ROB DANG is in his first year on the Board. Rob is a Partner and Co-Founder of Fortis General Counsel, LLP, a corporate law boutique that specializes in representing technology startups in the Silicon Valley and beyond. Rob also serves as an advisor to Curriki, a non-profit organization devoted to increasing educational access through technology, and also served on the Executive Committee of the MIT-Stanford Venture Lab for many years. Rob is a proud graduate of the University of California , Berkeley and received his J.D. from Santa Clara University. Rob became interested in golf while preparing for the bar exam in 1996, and after a long absence returned to the game in 2010, when both his daughters were occupied with elementary school. Rob's favorite golf course is Cinnabar Hills in San Jose , though if someone else is paying, he'll play Pebble Beach too. When not working, Rob spends most of his free time cooking, eating and traveling with his wife and two young daughters. Someday, Rob hopes to lower his index to something not quite so embarrassing.
MARI KOBARA is in her 3rd year on the Board and serves as the Secretary and Membership Chairperson for the club after serving 7 years as Secretary for the former Good Guys Chinese Golf Club. A native of San Francisco, Mari was introduced to golf as a very young child by her father but didn't appreciate the love of the sport until after graduating from U.C. Berkeley and joining the Oakland Chinese Golf Club (OCGC). This is where she met her husband, Wesley Chong and until the birth of their only child, they would be seen playing golf every weekend and vacationing in the most exotic golf resorts around the country. When Mari isn't spending time with her child and husband, she can be found at Gap Inc. where she's been working for over 15 years in HR, currently as the Director of Recruiting Operations. She enjoys photography, a hobby she became serious about after the birth of their child... can anyone say 50,000 digital photos and a 2 TB hard drive?
PAUL LOUI is serving in his first year on the Board. Born and raised in Honolulu, Paul has been in the Bay Area for nearly 30 years. After giving up competitive tennis after college (USTA #1 Boy's 18/Men's 21 Doubles), Paul self-taught himself the game at the tender age of 28 and honed his skills by "walking on" Walnut Creek's Boundary Oaks golf course after the pro shop closed! Eight years later, Paul became their club champion. An accountant by profession, Paul is a Sr. Analyst for Genworth Financial Wealth Management in Pleasant Hill, developing financial reporting systems. When not playing golf, Paul enjoys raising his twin boys with wife Masanna (non-golfer, LOL!) and competitive table tennis.
LAWRENCE S. MA is in his third year as a director and the chief executive officer of the Club. A native of San Mateo, Lawrence began playing golf at the age of 14, and barely made the Aragon High School golf team, three long years later. A self-styled "Wandering Golfer", Lawrence has played over 240 courses world-wide, and has either a logo ball or scorecard from each, gathering dust in his office. Lawrence is a proud member of Lake Merced Golf Club. Away from the golf course, Lawrence makes his living as a business and real estate attorney, and serves on the Board of Directors of Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. He is a member of the Organization of Chinese-Americans, the Asian-American Bar Association, NAAAP-SF, and the Bay Area Bruins. Prior to the arrival of DVRs, he would schedule his tee times around UCLA football and basketball games. He enjoys dining out and is eager to learn more about wine.
FARZAD "FUZZY" POURAHMADI begins his third year on the Board of Directors, and serves on the Tournaments committee, in charge of selecting and booking our tournament courses and non-golf venues. He has been playing golf since mid-90's when he started it as a weekend recreational event with few karate friends from the karate dojo. He has been playing serious golf in the past few years ever since he joined SFCGC in 2003. Fuzzy's favorite golf course is Half Moon Bay. On the personal level, Fuzzy is a Silicon Valley engineering technologist who enjoys developing new technologies in hi-tech and biotechnology fields. Other than golf, he also enjoys training in karate, playing tennis and skiing.
AVACHAI "A.T." TAYJASANANTis a newcomer to the game having picked up his first golf club while grinding his way through graduate school in New Hampshire. It has only been the past 5 years where he has a little more time to devote to the game and is on a quest to find a reliable swing. With the Dragons, AT is assisting Fuzzy and the Board with the scheduling and coordinating the tournament schedule. AT is also helping the Board prepare the new 2011 Dragons shirts for the upcoming season.
ANGIE WONG was bitten by the golf bug a couple years ago. Today, she is around a 14 index. She thinks her game would be a lot better if she could find cuter golf outfits, a la Ian Poulter, not Christina Kim. Alas, until Ian starts making women's clothing, Angie will have to continue working on her swing instead. In her spare time, Angie can be spotted at places like Oracle HQ, Peninsula Golf Shop, PetSmart and the Oracle Gym. To date, she's been a bit of a golf course nomad, playing anywhere from Harding, to Poppy Ridge to San Juan Oaks. Those courses are nice, but It's their Bloody Marys that really make them worth the drive. Having recently joined Crystal Springs, she has high hopes that their Bloody Marys are even better! Her golf goals for 2011 are to improve her GIR stats and beat Lawrence (just once). Oops, didn't mean to say the last bit out loud...
JONATHAN WONG has enjoyed golf since he was 13 years old. He has fond memories of perfecting his golf game at a field near his childhood home in Portland, Oregon. Although he was a better 200 meter dash sprinter than he was a golfer, he decided to join the high school golf team starting his freshman year. Today, he is still a better sprinter than he is a golfer as evidenced by his pronounced hip slide and reverse-C finish. He is a member of Lake Merced Golf Club. Jonathan makes his living in software development and real estate development. Blackjack is his favorite game after a round of golf. The engineer in him sees the house as entirely beatable as demonstrated in "21," starring Kevin Spacey.
