DRAGONS BATTLE FOR BOB TEAM SELECTION AT POPPY HILLS

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - A warm and sunny day greeted the Dragons on Sunday, as the club gathered at Poppy Hills G.C. to resume the chase for the Dragon Cup.  With the Battle of the Bay only two weeks away, Poppy Hills was also the last opportunity for members to play their way into the top 12 on the Dragon Cup points list and make the team for the annual matches against our rival clubs to be held at Chardonnay.

Paul Loui, who shot the field low gross at last year's BOB, was clinging to his cigarettes and the 12th spot coming into Poppy Hills.  He shot a 76 to win first low gross in the A Flight and secured his spot on the BOB team.  Joe Kwok's 80 was good for 2nd low gross in the A Flight, his best finish this season, and Tim Dien, still in snowboarding mode, shot 85 to finish 3rd low gross.

Wes Chong maintained his lead in the Dragon Cup race with a round of even par 72 -- the lowest gross score of the 2010 season -- and a net 70 for first low net in the A Flight.  He made five birdies to counter a rough start to each nine, including a double bogey on the reachable par-5 10th.

Tammy Lee tees off on #2.

Steve Tsang, however, had arguably the round of the day and his best performance at a club tournament to date.  Mired in a tie for 23rd on the Dragon Cup points list with just 100 points going into Poppy Hills, the objective was clear and simple -- go low and finish high.

Steve opened his round with an outward 38, and finished with an 80/net 70 -- he was tied with Wes Chong for low net in the A Flight, but lost the card-off and settled for second.  That double bogey on the 18th must have been tough to take.  It was nevertheless a round with 7 net birdies and a net eagle, and for good measures, Steve picked up a KP on No. 2.  It was a whopping 145-point day for Steve, just enough to tie Tommy Chong for 12th place on the points list and the last spot on the BOB team.

Ken Lum, 10th on the points list coming in,  also secured his spot on the BOB squad, with an 89/net 74.  The 3rd low net finish moved Ken up to 7th in the Dragon Cup race, setting up a possible match at Chardonnay with life-long nemesis Ray Jeung (94/net 78), who was also trying to shoot his way onto the Dragons team but will now have to play for Oakland CGC.

Meanwhile, in the B Flight, Paul Lee (91) continues his relentless pursuit of Wes Chong on the points list, with another low gross win of his own.  Coming into the tournament, Paul won his first start at a Federation Invitational, with rounds of 84-83 in Sacramento, and then anchored the Dragons in the NCGA Club Championship local qualifying with an 83 at Monarch Bay.  Had he not tripled the 9th and quad the 10th, he may very well have posted another round in the low 80's.

Tim Lohse sticks it within 5 feet on #17.

Tim Lohse (101) finished 2nd low gross, despite a 10 on Par-5 10th.  Tim, however, was throwing darts on the Par-3s, picking up KPs on No. 2, 15, and 17.   Tim's shot to 27' on the 172-yard 15th put the A-Flight to shame -- the low index gang led by Wes couldn't come closer than 40'6". Thomas Leung also picked up a KP on No. 11, but he struggled uncharacteristically with his driver and finished 3rd low gross, with a 101 that lost to Tim in a card-off.

Song-Min Wang, another B-Flight rookie, broke through with 92/net 71 for 1st low net.  Rob Dang got hurt by a 12 on No. 12, but he finished with a 102/net 76, good for 2nd low net, 120 points on the day, and the 10th spot on the BOB team.  Avachai "A.T." Tayjasanant (we will NOT be using his full name again this season) finished 3rd low net with a 102/net 80.

In the battle for high gross, Ray Lau and Arthur Wang (115) were "bested" by Martin Chang (125).  Martin, however, somehow found a green and picked up a KP on No. 6 (40') and, as usual, won a skin in the skins game.  Ray Lau, Jim Hwang, A.T. and Angelo Formosa, also won skins.

     Aaron Wainscoat on #18.

The top 12 on Dragon Cup points list (see below) will now gear up for the Battle of Bay, June 27 at Chardonnay Golf Club.  The full Dragon Cup points list will be posted shortly on the club website.  Club Captain Wes Chong will contact the team members and alternates this morning as well with details.  Last season, the Dragons finished 3rd at Napa Golf Course behind Oakland CGC and San Francisco CGC.

The Dragons will then return to The City in July for the club tournament at Presidio G.C.  Following the Presidio tournament, members will be gathering at Joe Kwok's for a summer BBQ, and undoubtedly a fun team draft for The Weekender to be conducted by captains Wes Chong and Lawrence Ma.

Congratulations again to the members of the 2010 BOB team and best of luck at Chardonnay!
