WEEKENDER CAPTAINS EXCHANGE OPENING SHOTS AT PRESIDIO AND TEAM DRAFT
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Mark Twain allegedly said, "The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco." There's probably more than one Dragon who would vouch for the quip, as the club returned to the City to play the Presidio GC Sunday.

The sun never once came out, as a cold wind blew through the old military course. The course played soft, and the poa annua greens were at their bumpy best. It was the two captains of the inaugural Weekender who came out on top in the A Flight, as Wes Chong took low net honors (76/net 74) and Lawrence Ma won low gross (84/net 77) in a card-off against Chris Chong (84/net 79). Joe Kwok, who is fighting a bad case of tennis elbow, winged it to an 85/net 82 for third low gross.
Wes, the impeccable one (except for that deep rough he calls a haircut), continues his recent good form, in a round that included a chip-in eagle on the Par-5 ninth. Lawrence got stuck in the 19th Avenue traffic, took 40 minutes to drive 7.8 miles from Lake Merced to the Presidio, made his tee time with only 5 minutes to spare, picked up a KP on the difficult No. 7, somehow shot 38 going out while throwing a hissy fit, and then hung on for dear life on the back nine. With his win, Lawrence also managed to limp into third place on the Dragon Cup points list, behind Paul Lee and Wes Chong.
Jon Chong came up from Tucson, did not bitch and moan like Lawrence, and fired an 89/net 76 for 2nd low net in the A Flight, and won the KP on No. 13, where apparently he was the only who can see the pin behind that damned oak tree. He also won a skin on No. 13, the only par 3 other than Wes' and good for a net birdie. Sam Lee picked up a KP on No. 4 and finished third low net (91/net 77). The remaining A flight KP went to Ming Chen's brother and guest Xiaoliang Chen (7'9" on No. 15).

In the B flight, Eric Mosbrooker broke through with his first win of the year, shooting 88/net 72 for first low gross honors. NCGA Championship team member Paul "Steady Eddie" Lee places again, with 90/net 73 for second low gross. Jim Hwang, despite a 9 and an 8 on the card, not to mention a 4-jack double with the two captains watching on the 18th, shot 93/net 77 for third low gross.
In the net division for the B flight, it was Rob Dang who took first place, with a rock solid 92/net 67 that completely avoided the dreaded "other" and included 7 net birdies. Rob also won two out of the four B flight KPs (NO. 4 and No. 13). Fuzzy Pourahmadi settled down after a bogey-snowman start and shot 99/net 72 for second low net. Tim Lohse couldn't avoid the dreaded "other" on the par 5 ninth and par 4 11th, but got a KP on No. 7 and racked up more Dragon Cup points with a 94/net 74, good for low third net. The remaining KP in the B flight went to Maiko Masuda, a stellar 9' on No. 15.
Three other skins were paid out in the skins game, to Tommy Chong, Ming Chen, and of course Martin Chang.

It didn't take folks long to get the heck out of the Presidio and head to Joe Kwok's place in South City, where tournament co-chair Alex Chong was already firing up the BBQ pit and grilling asparagus, chicken, and "gal-bi", marinaded Korean beef short ribs. The fog and wind followed us to South City, but thanks to Joe's enormous garage, the party got moved indoors, as members tested drivers on the launch monitor while other chowed down on the pot luck.
The main event of the Summer BBQ at Joe's was the team draft for The Weekender, August 14-15 at Half Moon Bay. As the membership enjoyed the homemade carrot cake and other dessert goodies, Angie Wong demanded that the captains state why the membership should want to be on a given team. The table was quickly turned on Little Miss Troublemaker, who was asked by Captain Lawrence why SHE deserved to be picked in the first place. "Short skirts" was her simple and elegant answer.

With a flip of a Euro coin, Captain Wes of the Red team got the first pick, and promptly select Steady Eddie Lee. The Black team's No. 1 draft pick was Eric Mosbrooker. The best reaction by a member to his/her selection had to be that of Jonathan Wong, who must have jumped through the roof in excitement in being selected relatively early by Captain Wes. The best argument made on one's own behalf was Maiko's "I have shorter skirts." Cathy Cheung, who has the curious distinction of being both the Most Improved Golfer and the Goofy Golfer of 2009, was Wes' last pick for the Red side, while Bobby Chang, last year's Dragon Cup runner-up, was the very last pick overall for Lawrence's Black team. The rosters for Black and Red teams are as follows:
Team Black: Lawrence Ma, Larry Inouye, Eric Mosbrooker, Angie Wong, Chris Chong, Steve Tsang, Jens Jaeger, Jim Hwang, Karen Fong, Martin Chang, Rob Dang and Bobby Chang.
Team Red: Wes Chong, Paul Lee, Tammy Lee, Tim Lohse, Ken Lum, Carol Lee, Maiko Masuda, Paul Loui, Jonathan Wong, Fuzzy Pourahmadi, A.T., and Cathy Cheung.

Weekender co-chair Martin Chang has one member currently sitting out as the 25th participant, but in order for the event to proceed with even sides of 14 players, three (3) more members are needed to fill out the last foursome. If you are interested in playing, please contact Martin immediately -- we would love to have 28 for the tournament. And make your case to Wes and Lawrence as to why you need to be on their respective teams!
Preview and further analysis of the two sides in the Weekender will follow next week, but Wes has already announced that he has a "workout program" for his side, while Lawrence is merely looking for the nearest watering hole to watch the Half Moon Bay sunset.
