OH CANADA! DRAGONS' CAROL LEE TAKES SECOND IN VICTORIA

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA - How far back is too far back?  The question is asked often as one looks at a leaderboard, wondering if a pick in fantasy golf can pull off a win or just top 10.  And if you're the golfer, what is your mindset when you tee it up after a horrendous start?

Those were the questions for the Dragons contingent at the 60th InterCity Invitational in Victoria, BC, where Cathy Cai, Lawrence Ma, Martin Chang and Carol Lee represented to the Dragons.  While Cathy opened the tournament with a great round, the other three Dragons were all in 15th place within their respective flights, second from dead-ass last to be precise.

    Carol takes her nemesis' money.

Apparently only Carol thought she was not out of it.  Showing a fighting spirit that would make her Weekender captain Wes Chong proud, Carol shot a stunning second round 98/net 72 that vaulted her from second to last to second low gross in the women's B-flight at the 60th InterCity Invitational in Victoria.

"I'd like to thank my nemesis," Carol said, referring to her Weekender bitch Martin, who wagered $5 with Carol for the best net score on final round.  "It was that bet that motivated me all day."

Victoria welcomed the Federation member clubs with glorious weather, sunshine and temperature in the low 70's.  At the claustrophobia-inducing Arbutus Ridge, Carol, who went kayaking and rock-climbing the day before, opened with a 116/net 90, while Cathy lead the ladies B-Flight with a net 74 (108).  Martin opened with a 116/net 84, while Lawrence, who was thinking about high tea and steaks, played like a chump in the Champions flight, putting up a nightmarish 89/net 80, turning in a scorecard with four dreaded "others."

The final round at Olympic View, a rugged beauty of a golf course, did not look promising for low scores.  Indeed, the scores went sky high on day two.  Cathy finished with a 125/net 90 and fell out of contention -- she finished 8th with a 233/net 164 total.  Martin made more than a few tactical errors and ballooned to a 131 -- a 247 2-day total good for men's field high gross (again).

Lawrence managed to make things look a bit more respectable by shooting a final round 85 from the tips at Olympic View, finishing 6th in the Champions flight (174/net 157).  85 was the second lowest gross score in fact for the day, with the course playing to a long 6600 yards from the blacks.  Zach Chinn, the youngest son of Federation legend Gaynor Chinn, shot 71-77 to take the field low gross honors at 148.  Low net honors went to Jerry Williams of Portland (150).

Carol went out and shot the best net score of the final day, men, women or child, and the low gross score (98) for the Women's B-flight by 7 shots.  She finished 6 shots behind Liza Lo of Vancouver (208), taking home a pair of crystals and racking up 100 Dragon Cup points.

Oh, and perhaps the sweetest bonus of all, $5 from Martin.

It was a great time for all this Labor Day weekend in Victoria, win or lose.  Victoria's Gorman Lee and Cathy Wong have done it again, staging a first-class tournament in their beautiful city.  The Dragons and guests explored the bustling harbor, went for high tea at the historic Empress Hotel on Saturday afternoon, and enjoyed the spas and food scene in Victoria.  The chefs of the region embrace local ingredients and multiculturalism of Canada.  At The Empress, the finger sandwiches at high tea included a delightful smoked salmon and a spicy curry.  The Prime Steakhouse's sauteed mushroom was sublime with a dash of soy sauce and a splash of lemon juice, a superb side to tender Alberta ribeye.  And at the local favorite for breakfast, Floyd's, curry, sundried tomatoes, and pesto found their way into omelettes.

The InterCity is the premier Invitational on the Federation calendar, hosted by the four member clubs of the Northwest.  The traditional four-way team match was won by the host club this year.  In 2011, the InterCity will move to Seattle, where the host club promises a pair of superb golf courses, including The Home Course, which co-hosted the 2010 US Amateur with Chambers Bay.
