DRAGONS CROWNED 2010 NORCAL CUP CHAMPION

AMERICAN CANYON, Calif. - The Dragons Golf Club claimed its first title in the NorCal Cup of the Chinese Golf Federation, as its 8-person team defeated Oakland CGC, Sacramento CGC, and Santa Clara/Foon Hay CGC at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.

The NorCal Cup is the culmination of a series of regional match play events among Federation clubs in Northern California.  Oakland CGC and The Dragons advanced to the NorCal Cup by virtue of their 1-2 finish in the Battle of the Bay in June, which also featured Marin CGC and San Francisco CGC.  Sacramento CGC advanced to Hiddenbrooke by defeating the Weekend Drivers club in the Challenge Cup of Sacramento, while Santa Clara/Foon Hay beat the Federation's newest member club, Monta Vista, in the Valley Cup to get to the NorCal Cup.

The conditions on Sunday were downright miserable at the already-difficult Hiddenbrooke, as rain showers, heavy at times, greeted Capt. Paul Loui and the Dragons on a cold and breezy morning.  Each competitor played against one member from the other three clubs in match play, with the winner getting 1 point for a win, 1/2 point for a half, and 0 for a loss.  A golfer who defeats all three opponents in his/her group can score a maximum of 3 points for the team.  The Dragons scored a total of 15.5 points, besting Oakland CGC and Sacramento, which both had 12 points.  Santa Clara/Foon Hay racked up 8.5 points for the day to finish last.

It was a total team effort, as all eight Dragons scored at least a point for the team.  Carter Mau led the way, going 3-0 in his three matches and put up three points on the scoreboard early.  Tim Lohse, Jim Hwang, and Lawrence Ma each went 2-0-1 to add 2.5 points each for the team.  In going 2-1-0 in his group, Paul Lee defeated Ray Jeung, who couldn't make the Dragons team, but found his way onto the Oakland CGC squad.  Paul Loui, Ken Lum and Angie Wong each won a point in their respective groups.

Each member of the victorious NorCal Cup team received 100 Dragon Cup points, and with that, Paul Lee (1255 points) has reclaimed the lead in the Dragon Cup race over defending champion Wes Chong (1210).

Congratulations to all Dragons who competed in the Battle of the Bay and the NorCal Cup!
