UNCLE LOUI TAMES RODDY RANCH, TAKES DRAGON CUP LEAD

ANTIOCH, Calif. - A freak late-season winter storm struck last weekend, as the Dragons arrived at Roddy Ranch for the second tournament of the season.  The temperatures were in the low 50's, a cold wind blew, and for the first two hours of the day, rain showers came down on the gang.  It wasn't helpful that the Dragons once again ran into a bunch of chops, this time the Roddy Ranch Men's Club, who apparently really suck on their own course and doomed both our club and another NCGA group just ahead of us, to a 6-hour day.

D's McMuffins and hash browns. "Hear me roar!"

Once again, the wise and steady veteran Paul Loui emerged as the low gross winner, posting a 74 on the rugged California links in his backyard.  Chris Chong, also playing near his home, slept-walked to a second low gross in the A-Flight (84), after working a triple shift and running on zero slip for 22 hours preceding his tee time.  Rookie Brian Sue, whose textbook swing looks too good to struggle for long, grinded out an 87 and took low third low net.

In the net division, new dad Steve Tsang has apparently started to sleep through the night again -- he fired an 80/net 66 for first place.  Howard Choy was on his way to taking down Uncle Loui straight up after a front-nine 36, but blew up on the back nine and limped in at 84/net 74 for second low net.  Defending Dragon Cup champion Paul Lee shook off the honeymoon rust and turned in an 88/net 74 for third low net.

Song-Min Wang tees off the 1st..

Over in the B Flight, Song-Min Wang beat all but 5 guys in the A Flight with an 86 gross, and easily took B Flight Net division with a net 65.  Judy Wu, powered by a greasy bag full of Egg McMuffins and Micky D hashbrowns, turned in a 93/net 69 for second low net.  Alex Chong sported the '11 club shirt and shot 94/net 76, good for third low net.  Alex was the big winner of the net skins game, with two (paying $34 each).

Dr. Po-Jen Lin (93/net 69), who came to the Dragons courtesy of Song-Min, took B Flight first low gross in his club debut.  A.T. shot 101 and placed second low gross, while Greg DeForest finished third low net with 101/net 79.  Greg also picked up a skin.  The other skins on the day went to Rob Dang, Paul Lee, Danny Nam, and, with all those pops to play with, Martin Chang, who made net eagle on the Par-5 18th, on his way to a whopping 125.

With his consecutive low gross wins, Paul Loui is now leading the Dragon Cup race at 200 points.  Just five points behind is Song-Min Wang, with Greg DeForest and Chris Chong tied for third at 175 points.

After the tournament, the traditional post-golf club dinner took place at Pho Vietnam, in sleepy downtown Brentwood.  Fourteen of us practically took over the tiny joint, and hot bowls of pho were perfect after a long day in the cold.  Once again Gustavo "Quiros" Gonzalez got to experience something totally new to the Venezuelan, and bravo to Gustavo for taking down the tripe in the combo beef pho and dipping the spring rolls without fear in fish sauce.  It was good times, as always, talking golf together, with Jim Hwang's Chicago Bulls' taking down Miami on the big screen in the corner.  The long drive home was no problem, as the iced coffees with milk caffeinated Jonathan Wong and others in charge of carpools.

If you missed out on Pho Vietnam, we'll probably do it again in June, when the Dragons return to Brentwood to play Deer Ridge (Registration already open); Deer Ridge will be the site of the 2011 Battle of the Bay (June 26), and top 12 on the Dragon Cup points list through our Deer Ridge tournament will represent the club in the grudge match against San Francisco, Oakland Marin CGCs.
