THE DRAGONS WIN FEDERATION TEAM MATCHES AT LACGC MEMORIAL DAY INVITE

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Dragons Golf Club claimed its second Federation Team Match title in three years at the LACGC Memorial Day Invitational last Friday, as the team of George Hsu, Jim Hwang, Chris Chong and Jon Chong shot a 7-under 3-best net ball score to prevail over SFCGC and Oakland CGC.  The matches took place on the Ike Course at the renovated Industry Hills G.C., and the team was anchored by Chris' 83 and Jon's 86.  Jim (96) and George (99) had strong starts that were offset by a couple of big numbers.

The LACGC Memorial Day Invitational's 36-hole medal play began the following morning, with Judy Wu and Greg DeForest joining the gang.  Jon Chong stayed hot and opened with an 83/net 1-under to lead the President's flight at the Babe course of Industry Hills.  We don't know how Jon slept with the lead, but he battled the second day at Royal Vista, and finished with a 92, 175/net 6-under total for 2nd low net in the President's flight.  This is a marked improvement year to year for Jon, who actually won the Goofy Golfer Prize last Memorial Day in Sacramento in his flight.  And to top it all off, Jon won a Kindle at the banquet raffle.  Way to go, Jon!

Jim Hwang, who live-blogged all weekend on our Facebook Group page, made his Federation invitational debut with a 90-89 (179/net 9-over), just missing out on placing in the top three, as the scores were high in the President Flight.  George Hsu struggled the first day (101) and finished at 194/net 18-over.  But George got to take home a shiny waffle iron from the banquet raffle for his troubles.

Also making their debut were Judy and Greg.  Judy (94-95/net 10-over) just missed out on low gross honors in the ladies flight, while Greg struggled in the Executive Flight and flirted with the Goofy Golfer distinction with a 209/net 25-over total.

In the Championship Flight, Chris couldn't quite follow up on his strong start on Friday during the Team Matches, and opened with a 90.  He came in at 176/net 18-over.  Allen Mar of LACGC claimed Field Low Gross honors with a 153 total.

With the first "major" of the season in the books, there are some dramatic changes on the Dragon Cup points list.  Jon Chong (305 points) is now your Dragon Cup points leader, with 100 points from the team victory in the Federation Team Matches and 175 points for the 2nd Low Net honors at the LACGC Invitational.  Chris Chong is second with 300 points, followed by Paul Loui and Greg DeForest at 225 points.  Members of the NCGA Associate Club Championship qualifying team (Paul, Greg, Jonathan Wong, and Alex Chong), though they did not make it to the next stage, each received 25 points for their efforts at Paradise Valley on May 25.  George and Jim may have solidified their spots on the BOB squad with their Federation Team Match victory points, while Judy has moved into the top 10 as well.
