HOME COOKING: JONAROO GAINS GROUND AT LAKE MERCED

DALY CITY, Calif. - The Dragons returned to Lake Merced Golf Club last Thursday, and sure enough, the Dragons who call Lake Merced home showed well, led by Jonathan Wong's first low net finish in the A Flight.

There were signs that The Jonaroo was putting it all together, but he really broke through big time with a personal-best 75 at Lake Merced last Tuesday.  The golf course that was presented to the Dragons on Thursday, however, wasn't going to yield anything like that.  The USGA, which will be conducting the 2012 US Girls Junior Amateur at Lake Merced next summer, came through town, and the Super got the course ready for inspections.

Consequently, the Dragons confronted championship-fast greens and wicked pins.  The fog hung over the tree-lined and heavily-bunkered course, only yielding to a stiff ocean breeze late in the afternoon.  It couldn't have played more difficult.

So, Jonathan's 87/net 73 was quite good enough for A Flight 1st place.  Jason Jeung, a Lake Merced junior member, made three birdies en route to an 84/net 74 for second place.  Steve Tsang, who is definitely getting it together, shot 86/net 75 for third.

Over in the gross division, it was pretty gross.  Only Wes Chong (78) managed to break 80, and that beat Paul Loui (82) for first.  Another Lake Merced member, Lawrence Ma, grabbed third with an 85 that began with a horrific bogey-bogey-triple-triple-bogey-bogey start.  Yuck.

In the B Flight, Ray Jeung, who might as well be a member given his multiple appearances with John Chu in the member-guest Toobajo tourney, took first low gross with a 91.  Rob Dang was second with a 99, and Judy Wu (yup, another Lake Merced member) took third with a 100.

Angela Wong (the quiet one) took first low net in the B Flight with a (109/net 70).  Song-Min Wang (92/ net 73) was steady as usual, cruising to second.  Karen Fong took third place with a (109/net 75).

The skins game paid out $28 per skin, and the winners were Rob Dang, Tim Lohse (109/net 86), Angela Wong, Steve Tsang, Ray Jeung, Judy Wu and Jim Hwang.  The best skin of the day had to be Jim's net 1 on the Par-4 10th, where he holed out a punch 6-iron from the right hand side of the fairway for eagle 2.  That probably made dinner taste better, as Jim's A-Flight debut was kind of rough (96/net 81).

And so, the pack is closing in on Jon Chong, who did not play at Lake Merced and sits atop the Dragon Cup rankings with 445 points.  Paul Loui crept closer at 405, and Song-Min Wang is now third at 385.  Chris Chong (96/net 87, ouch) is fourth at 365, and The Jonaroo has jumped to fifth with 360 points.

After the round, the Dragons quickly retreated to the Cypress Bar at Lake Merced, where the members gathered for a mid-season club dinner and the Team Draft for the 2011 Weekender.  Club Captain Wes Chong began the proceeding by introducing to the club to Mr. Richard Jeung, our 2011 honorary member.  Rich served as an officer in the 80's for the Good Guys CGC, our predecessor club, and was among the best players back in the day on the Federation circuit.  Rich was presented with a custom-embroidered vest bearing the club emblem, which he said he will proudly wear at the Seattle InterCity Labor Day Invitational, his first Federation start in years.

The Weekender Draft then promptly got underway, and with the first pick, RED captain Wes Chong took Jim Hwang.  Song-Min Wang was the Team Black's No. 1 draft choice.  Full coverage and analysis of the draft will follow later this week, but the complete roster will be posted to our Facebook Group page tonight and on the club website, when The Jonaroo gets to it.

The Weekender will be held at Bayonet & Blackhorse, August 6 & 7.  In the meantime, a half dozen or more Dragons have entered the Sacramento CGC's summer getaway tournament at Red Hawk Resort in Reno.  The Seattle Labor Day Invitational (see attached entry form, deadline Aug. 12) will be held at Trophy Lakes and Washington National -- the Dragons have our own outing at Chambers Bay on Labor Day Monday, and there is still room for three more for the side trip to the 2015 US Open site.
