JUDY WU FINISHES SECOND AT NCGA WOMEN'S NET AMATEUR
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.- In another first for the Dragons Golf Club, Angie Wong and Judy Wu represented the Club in the 7th Annual NCGA Women's Net Amateur. And what a great debut for the ladies, as Judy finished second and Angie T12 in the Director's (second) flight in the 36-hole net competition at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
Judy shot a two-day net total of 143 (1 under), and finished five strokes behind Charlotte Wells of EWGA Sacramento (70-68 138 net). Angie went 154 net (10 over) to finish in a 5-way tie for 12th. Both ladies played with an 18 handicap.
The Women's Net Amateur is open to both associate and regular NCGA club members. A plurality of the participants came from the EWGA ranks, but there were also ladies from some of the great clubs in Northern California, like Olympic, Burlingame, Blackhawk, and TPC Stonebrae. 82 ladies competed in three flights, with 30 in the Director's Flight.
In reviewing both set of scorecards (posted at the NCGA site almost the moment the players finished), one sees that both Judy and Angie fought hard and never gave up at any point. And it doesn't get any rougher than the way Judy started on Thursday. Teeing off on No. 10 at Poppy Hills, she went Triple-Double-Par-Triple, 4-over net right out of bed. And that damned nine ended with another double on the Par-5 18th.
5-over-net. Not good at all. Long ways from the Bay, hubby Greg is at home with a bad back -- could've mailed it in and it'd be understandable.
Hell no.
Judy fought hard, and took two strokes back on the front nine for a net 75 on Day 1, just five strokes off the lead. Day 2 started with another double on the Par-5 10th (her favorite hole by now), but by the time Judy made the turn, she was 1-under on the day. She then made five natural pars on the front (5 net birdies), and finished with an 86/net 68. She held the clubhouse LEAD at 1-under, and only Ms. Wells managed a good round among the overnight leaders to win the flight.

Angie's story began on Thursday with the makings of a geat round. Teeing off No. 1, Angie made two natural birdies (net eagles) to get to even par through 6, and was just 1-over net through 15. After giving up a double on Par-4 16th, she made the dreaded snowman on the 118-yard Par 3 17th. She ended Day 1 with a net 78.
But those of us following the two ladies on Facebook saw Angie in good spirits, drawing on the wisdom of Uncle Loui. She went on to grind out a Day 2 net 76, including a natural par/net birdie on 17th, and a solid debut in the Women's Net Amateur.
The news of the ladies' exploits got back to the Board fast, and it was unanimous that the Women's Net Amateur deserves equal treatment as a Federation invitational in terms of points. So, the Guru will be awarding Judy with 175 points for her second place finish, and Angie with 25 points for competing down at Poppy. Preliminarily, the standings show Judy jumping from 14th to second, with 410 points. Jon Chong clings to his lead (445 points), while Paul Loui is third (405). Angie appears to have moved ahead of Ray Jeung, into the 16th position at 185 points.
No rest for the weary -- Angie will be making her next start next weekend at Red Hawk, where she will join Uncle Loui and a contingent of Dragons at the Reno Invitational hosted by Sacramento CGC. Judy will play next at the 2011 Weekender at Bayonet & Blackhorse, August 6 & 7.
Congratulations to Judy and Angie for a great showing!
