LOUI MAINTAINS DRAGON CUP LEAD AT CRYSTAL SPRINGS
BURLINGAME, Calif.- On a down-right hot afternoon at Crystal Springs, Paul Loui stayed exactly that as he took A Flight Low Net honors in the September club tournament and increased his lead in the Dragon Cup race.
The Crystal Springs tournament may prove to be pivotal in the Dragon Cup race this year. Coming into the tournament Sunday, Paul had a 90-point lead on "Slim" Jim Hwang. Slim, however, was well-positioned to make up points. Crystal Springs, which Uncle Loui has never seen, is the home course of strong A-Flight players like Wes Chong and Steve Tsang, both of whom played well in Seattle. Lawrence Ma was a Crystal Springs member before he joined Lake Merced. Joe Kwok and Jonathan Wong both knew the hilly Peninsula track well. A low net win by Jim, who had the most strokes in the A Flight, combined with strong showings by the aforementioned gentlemen (and maybe a little hiccup by Paul), could have helped Jim close the gap.

But the perfect storm never materialized on the sun-shiny Indian summer day. Uncle Loui, in a display of his course management prowess, made no mistakes and shot 74/net 71. Jonaroo finished second at 85/net 74, while Jim managed to scratch out some points with a 91/net 76, good for third low net.
What about the guys who failed Slim? Wes had inexplicable issues on the front nine (41), but rallied with a back nine 34 (with a double) to shoot 75 for first low gross honors in the A Flight. Lawrence finished second low gross with 83 (with a triple and two doubles), followed by Joe Kwok at 85 (with a 9 on Par-4 9th). Without the round wreckers, L-Ma and Wijaya could have challenged Loui on the net side. Steve (92/net 79) didn't threaten.
Meanwhile in the B Flight, staying hot also is one Judy Wu, who won first low net with an 88/net 71. The ladies swept the B Flight net division, as Angie Wong came in second (91/net 73) and Angela Wong third (107/net 75). In the gross division, Mr. Consistency, Song-min Wang, shot 90 for the win. Rob Dang (98) and Norman Lui (100) were second and third, respectively.

So, with just the season finale at Metropolitan remaining, Loui leads the Dragon Cup with 980 points, while Slim stayed in second place at 870. Judy (850 points) made up ground with her win. In the next 10 days, the extracurricular tournaments featuring the leaders may shake up the race some more. Slim and Loui are on the NorCal Cup team headed to DarkHorse this weekend to defend our title, while Judy and Angie will be playing the NCGA Women's Four-Ball at Quail Lodge next week.
No, to his credit, Jim did not attempt to buy Paul off with a prime rib and a bottle of Silver Oak at the club dinner at Broadway Prime. It would have taken a bottle of Petrus, we think, to make Uncle Loui disappear on October 16. It was a lovely evening, though, with Jim's wife Debra, Cathy Cheung, Miyoung Park, Fuzzy Pourahmadi, Angela, Norman and Lawrence all in attendance.
