"IN IT TO WIN IT": Dragons Repeat at NorCal Cup

AUBURN, Calif.-  The Dragons GC successfully defended its title as NorCal Cup champs, as its 8-person team defeated Oakland CGC, Sacramento CGC and Monta Vista GC at DarkHorse in Auburn.

The NorCal Cup pits the top two teams from the Battle of the Bay against the winners of the Challenge Cup in Sacramento and the Valley Cup in the South Bay.  Oakland CGC and the Dragons advanced to DarkHorse from the BoB at DeerRidge in June.  Monta Vista advanced from the Valley Cup bracket, while the host club, Sacramento CGC, represented the central valley.  Each team member played one member fom the other three clubs in net match play, with one point awarded for a win, 1/2 point for a half, and zero for a loss.

The Dragons fielded a team with the lowest combined index, and gave strokes in nearly all matches.  DarkHorse, a former Golf Magazine Top 100 You Can Play, presented a stern test, even from the forward tees.  While Uncle Loui, Slim and Lawrence overnighted in Rocklin after a Saturday practice round (spotting numerous Oakland team members), most of the Dragons made the long drive from the Bay Area in the wee small hours of Sunday morning to make the 9 AM shotgun.

None of it mattered.  "In it to win it," as Slim said.  It was a resounding victory for the Dragons, racking up 17.5 points to Monta Vista's 12.  The home team, Sacramento, finished third with 11 points, while the BoB champion Oakland CGC came in with just 7.5 points.  Karen Fong, Angie Wong and Lawrence Ma all went 3-0-0 in their matches, combining for 9 team points.  Paul Loui shot the field low gross (74) and earned 2.5 points.  Chris Chong and Jim Hwang both went 2-0-1 for 2 points each, while Alex Chong went 1-1-1 for 1.5 ponts.  Wes Chong overcame a disastrous front-nine 43 and shot 33 on the back nine to scratch out a half point for the team.

Each member of our team received 100 Dragon Cup points.  Thus, Paul Loui (1080 points) stays ahead of teammate Jim Hwang (970) by the same margin as last week.  Wes Chong (860) leaps over Judy Wu (850), who did not play at the NorCal Cup but is competing in the NCGA Women's Fourball today and tomorrow at Quail Lodge with Angie Wong (645).

Congratulations to all Dragons who competed in the Battle of the Bay and the NorCal Cup!
