UNCLE LOUI CRUISES TO DRAGON CUP TITLE AT THE METRO

OAKLAND, Calif. - Less than 24 hours before the Dragons' final tournament of the year, Paul Loui was standing on the 10th tee of Lake Merced Golf Club, with 100-plus people watching him.

Paul and Jeff Yee had just won their flight in the Toobajo, the Lake Merced member-guest.  They found themselves in a shoot-out with other flight winners (including John Chu and Ray Jeung) for the big bucks.  Teeing off in the alternate shot shoot-off for his team, Uncle Loui blocked one into the driving range fence on the right of the 10th fairway.

Yikes.  Team Yee-Loui went on to card a smooth 8/net 7 and was eliminated.

So how's that for a positive swing thought to sleep on?  Going into the Season Finale at The Metropolitan last Sunday, Paul held a 95-point lead in the Dragon Cup race over Jim Hwang.  It would require an epic fail by Paul (i.e. 6th or worse) and 1st low net by Slim for Paul to lose the Dragon Cup.  Was he thinking about the epic fail just a day before at Lake Merced? Did the apparition of Bobby Chang, who lost the 2009 Dragon Cup on the 10th hole at Lake Merced, visit Uncle Loui in his bed?

No way.  Paul shot 76 on a windy afternoon at The Metro, finishing 2nd low gross in the A Flight to Wes Chong's 73, and became the 2011 Dragon Cup champion (1160 points).  Brian Sue, who found his stride in tournament play mid-summer, closed with 78, good for third low gross.

Slim did make a charge at Uncle Loui, finishing third low net in the A Flight (84/net 70).  The hunter himself was also being hunted.  Jim's finish was just enough to maintain his second place Dragon Cup finish (1055), as Judy Wu (1030) made her charge (95/net 79) at Jim for his spot.

Jason Kung (80/net 66) made another step forward in his quest to improve, taking A Flight 1st low net, besting Steve Tsang (82/69).

Over in the B Flight, Alex Chong (86) closed out the year with a 1st low gross title.  Song-Min Wang (92) finished second, and rookie Bobby Yu third (94).  Angela Wong took 1st low net (99/net 68). Ray Jeung (88/net 71) took second low net, while Karen Fong (101/net 74) finished third.

After the golf, the Dragons went immediately over to Jason Kung's fine establishment, the Broken Rack, to enjoy a pub food buffet and shoot pool, as the tournament scoring team went to work.  Jason provided the club with a comfy private party room, complete with a big flatscreen to watch Sunday Night Football and six pool tables nearby for the Dragons to play on.  The Rack had just about everything on tap and the food just kept coming and coming.  The Board would like to thank Jason again for his wonderful hospitality -- we would love to come back to The Broken Rack in the future.

With the season concluded, the Competition Committee is now at work determining the Most-Improved Players of 2011 (and yes, the Goofy Golfers of 2011), to be announced at the Holiday Party & Awards Dinner at The Olympic Club, Sunday, November 20.  Alex is getting the keepsake trophies, picking up the massive perpetual trophy from 2010 champ Paul Lee, and calling the club's engraver.  Martin Chang and Angie Wong, the co-hosts of the Holiday Party, are hard at work preparing for a great evening.  If you haven't done so yet, please RSVP for the Holiday Party through the Evite in your in-box.  While you're at it, don't forget to renew your membership for 2012 -- five extra raffle tickets for the Holiday Party raffle if you renew by November 13.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PAUL LOUI, 2011 DRAGON CUP CHAMPION!
