Dragons finish third at BOB '09
NAPA, Calif., June 28, 2009 - In a closely contested and spirited Battle of the Bay at Napa Golf Course yesterday, the Dragons finished third in the 12-person team competition against San Francisco Chinese Golf Club and the Oakland Chinese Golf Club. SFCGC and OCGC will go on to play in the NorCal Cup in August, against the two top Federation club teams of the Valley (Sacramento, Stockton, etc) at Poppy Ridge. The host club, Marin CGC, did not field a team this season.
Each member of the Dragons competed against one player from SF and Oakland, respectively, in a net medal play competition -- the lowest net score in a group earns 3 points, the second lowest score receives 2, and the highest low score would yield 1 point to the team. The Dragons scored a total of 21 points. Oakland, with 27 points prevailed, with San Francisco coming in second at 24 points.
Tim Lohse (73 net), Tommy Chong (70 net) and Bobby Chang (71 net) led the Dragons with three points each, while Chris Chong, George Hsu, and Paul Loui each added two points. Paul Loui (73) and Bobby Chang (76) also shot the tournament 1st and 2nd low gross respectively, and were recognized for their stellar play by the host club, Marin CGC.

Club Captain Wes Chong addressed the team prior to the competition, stating that he was very proud of the team and marveled at the diversity of our squad. Five members of our squad had an index of 8.5 or lower, compared to 3 from OAK and 1 from SFCGC. Carol Lee represented the Dragons, while the other clubs did not include women on their squads. Each member received a commemorative "Ying Yang" ballmarker from the Captain before setting out on the morning shotgun.
In the Dragon Cup race, Tommy, Tim and Bobby each received 100 points for winning all of their matches at the BOB. Chris, George and Paul each received 50 points for winning one of two matches. Tommy continues to lead the Dragon Cup race with 520 points, while Bobby has taken over 2nd place, with 415 points. Here now is the preliminary Dragon Cup Standings after the BOB:

Congratulations to all who competed at Napa GC. The next opportunity for Federation team play will be at the Labor Day/InterCity Invitational in Portland, Labor Day weekend, where the Federation Cup will be contested during the Saturday round at Pumpkin Ridge GC. Each Federation club may field a team of 4, whose scores will be aggregated to compete against the other 4-person teams entered in the Federation Cup.
