Bobby and George shakes up Dragon Cup race at Harding

Steve Tsang tees off of the 17th at Harding.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., July 13, 2009 -  After spending the month of June in the North Bay, the Dragons returned to San Francisco to visit Harding Park Golf Course, the site of the 2009 President's Cup.  Just three days before our tournament, the PGA Tour came in and punched the greens of the venerable layout on the shores of Lake Merced to abate poa annua.  Despite less than ideal course conditions (so that Eldrick Woods and his friends can have smooth greens in October), three Dragons -- Paul Loui, Wes Chong, and Bobby Chang -- posted 76s.  The three-way tie atop the A-Flight gross division had to be broken by a scorecard playoff, resulting in veteran Paul's second low gross win of the season, with Wes finishing second and Bobby third.

Bobby's 76, however, was a net 71, good for 2nd low net in the A-Flight.  His 3rd low gross and 2nd low net finish brought him 75 Dragon Cup points, and with his net birdies and eagles, Bobby racked up 115 points for the day.  As a result, Bobby has now taken over the lead of the Dragon Cup points race, with 530 points.   Tommy Chong, who did not play Harding, is only 10 points behind at 520.  Wes stays at third place with 455 points.

George Hsu , with his stellar 87 (net 67) took 1st place low gross and low net in the B-Flight.  With 7 net birdies and a net eagle, George earned 245 Dragon Cup points on the day, and vaulted from T-11 to fourth place on the Dragon Cup points list (420 points).  New member Jim Hwang finished 2nd low gross in the B-flight (88/net 71).   Angelo Formosa, just seven weeks removed from knee surgery, finished 3rd low gross and 3rd low net behind Jim, with a 91/net 71 (plus a KP).   Dr. Thomas Leung, making his season debut, shot 91/net 68 for a third low net finish.  The good doctor also picked up a KP and one of the four skins up for grabs.

Post-tournament dinner of spaghetti and veal parmigiana at Joe's of Westlake.

Joe Kwok , with a 79/net 67, finished 1st low net in the A-Flight, while Ming Chen took 3rd place low net (72 net).  Paul and Wes split the KPs in the A-flight.  Tim Lohse and Alex Chong each recorded a B-flight KP.

The top lady golfer of the tournament was Mari Kobara, with a score of 101.   Carol Lee shot the lady's low net of the day, with a 108/net 78.   Angie Wong's guest, Jane Hall, took home one of the four skins.

Following a couple of round of drinks and the prize ceremony at Harding's grill room, 13 Dragons (plus guest Michael Tseng and a couple of young Chongs/future Dragons) headed over to good old  Joe's of Westlake for our traditional post-tournament dinner.  Healthy helpings of spaghetti and veal parmigiana were consumed, before the iFight Pro sword/gun fights broke out among the iPhone-packing adults at the table.

The Dragons will head south to the Monterey Peninsula for our fifth tournament of the year at Poppy Hills, August 9.  Poppy Hills has been on the rotation of courses for the AT&T National Pro-Am on the PGA Tour, and is the home of the NCGA.  The registration deadline is July 14, and we hope to see everybody in Monterey.
