Shoot-out at San Juan Oaks
![]() |
Thanks again to those of you who turned out for the San Juan Oaks tournament last Saturday. We had yet another chamber of commerce day -- sunny, temperature in the mid-80's and hardly any wind (for at least the front nine), and as a result, the scoring was torrid.
In the A-Flight, we welcomed Paul Loui back to Federation club golf, and the legend and the veteran Wes Chong took on the rookies, Tim Dien and Bobby Chang, in a shoot-out that had to be seen to be believed. At one point, three guys were under par, and Tim went to 4-under, as the lead group carved up the front nine in the meadows of San Juan Oaks. But as the groups turned into the windy and brutally tight holes in the hills on the back nine, the birdies gave way to bogies. Wes and Tim ended the day tied at 73 each, and Tim was declared the low gross winner by way of a scorecard playoff. Paul and Bobby both shot 75 -- Paul finished 3rd low gross, and Bobby's net 68 (with a 7 course handicap) was good for first low gross the A-flight. Two groups behind, Larry Inouye shot 79 for a net 69 to take third low net, in his first tournament of the year.
In the B-Flight, Cathy Cai, who had the dubious honor of high gross at Wente (and the winner of a custom Bridgestone towel), went from last to first low net, shooting a 103 for a net 70. She racked up 40 points worth of net birdies as well. Tommy Chong backed up his strong Tucson Invitational showing with a solid 88, good for first low gross in the B-flight and 2nd low net. King Lip quietly (is he ever loud?) plopped his way around San Juan Oaks for a 98, good enough for a T-2 with Fuzzy Pourahmadi. Fuzzy's 98 was also good for 2nd low net in the B-flight, and he also earned 35 points of net birdies and eagles.
High gross honors for San Juan Oaks, "God Bless His Mutha," went to Martin Chang, with a 135. But, Martin made off with one of the KPs in the B-flight. Hang in there! Too bad Chris Do didn't play!
The post-round dinner was at Korean Springs on Kiely in Santa Clara . This no non-sense old-school Korean BBQ joint served up all of the classics for Fuzzy, Cathy, Bobby and yours truly, along with three bottles of that Korean beer that no golfer should ever drink - "O.B." See attached photo to check out the spread!
CTO Jonathan Wong is hard at work updating the Dragon Cups -- the Board has decided award net birdies and eagles, rather than natural birdies and eagles, and as a consequence, Jonathan now has to design algorithms or whatever that his card-counting brain thinks best for accurate and efficient scoring. We expect to get those up this week.
