High scores in high winds at StoneTree
Paul Loui tees off the 1st at Stone Tree. |
The Dragons Golf Club ventured north of the Golden Gate Bridge on June 14 with its largest contingent to date and took on the beautiful StoneTree Golf Club in Novato . Against a strong wind whipping through the meadows and hills of StoneTree, Wes Chong shot a low gross 78 on his way to his first A-flight victory of the year, while Alex Chong finished low gross (91) and first low net (net 74) in the B-Flight.
Tommy Chong, having played his way into the A-Flight half-way through the season, validated his ever-rising game with a first low net finish in the A-Flight (85/net 71), with a KP to boot. Tommy has now taken the lead in the Dragon Cup race, with a total of 420 points. Wes is in second place at 375 points, with Tim Dien (DNP) in third place at 355 points. Alex's solid finishes, combined with 7 net birdies, netted him a whopping 235 points. Alex (295 points) has vaulted from 14th to 6th place on the Dragon Cup points list, behind Bobby Chang (4th - 315) and Chris Chong (5th - 300).

The up-to-date Dragon Cup points list and the full-field scorecard will be available on the Club website this week.
Some 31 Dragons, including seven ladies, competed at StoneTree. Although some members were wondering whether the Blue tees, just shy of 6,000 yards, could challenge everybody, all were thankful at the end of the day that Tournament Director Alex Chong didn't put us a single inch further back on the tee blocks. StoneTree's many meandering creeks and looming lakes, combined with her usual high winds and firm greens in the afternoon, took their toll on the field.
Paul Loui shot 80 to earn 2nd low gross in the A-Flight and took one KP, while Bobby Chang continued to rack up points by taking 3rd low net, 2nd low gross and a KP. Chris Chong took third low net as well as a KP in the A-flight. Tim Lohse's 96 was good for 2nd low gross and 2nd low net in the B-flight, and George Hsu took 3rd low gorss (98) and 3rd low net (net 78). Cathy Cheung, Ilan Rosenthal and Ray Lau, all making their season debuts, each took home a KP prize as well.
In the Skins Game , Martin Chang, with 32 pops on the card, scalped everybody but Mari Kobara. B-flight folks -- with all those strokes you get, why would you EVER sit out a net skins game?
After the tournament, the members gathered in the grill room at StoneTree to enjoy a round of drinks and the closing minutes of the NBA Finals (Congratulations to the LA Lakers ). Phil Gee made his first start of the season. We also welcomed new members Angie Wong and Xiaoming Chen to the club, as well as club guests Maiko Masuda andTyler Needman.

As the sun went down behind the Marin Headlands , thirteen members and guests made their way down the 101 to Buckeye Roadhouse in Mill Valley for the post-tournament dinner, where they enjoyed another round of cocktails, a bottle of Chateuneuf-du-Pape, and steaks and other entrees with the customary trimmings, all executed to perfection. The culinary adventures with Fuzzy and Lawrence are all about savoring the good shots and favorite holes from the day, while getting to know a few new friends just a little better each time out.
The good times will roll next month through San Francisco , when the Dragons visit Harding Park , the site of the 2009 President's Cup. Tournament registration will open shortly, and Fuzzy and Lawrence are open to suggestions on the next post-golf culinary adventure.
See you in The City in July!
