The '09 Season Opener and Members Wine-tasting Reception at Wente

The inaugural season of the Dragons Golf Club teed off on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Wente Vineyard. We were blessed with a gorgeous day in Livermore -- sunny and warm, and uncharacteristically light winds. Our own Joe Kwok, master clubfitter, provided a complimentary consultation session, complete with his TrackMan launch monitor on the range at Wente prior to the round. Although the weather conditions were favorable, the greens at Wente were US Open hard and the scores ballooned, as we looked forward to our members' reception.
In the A Flight, newcomer Tim Dien shot 77 for best gross score overall and the second best net score -- the latter is particularly impressive given Tim's course handicap of 3. Chris Chong finished 2nd low gross and took low net in the A flight. They each recorded a birdie and a KP, so they stand tied atop the Dragon Cup leaderboard at 170 points each.
In the B Flight, Dr. Ron Hwang charged heroically through the Wente Course, barely breaking 100, but put up a net 78, good enough for 2-1 finish in gross and net divisions in the B Flight. He also had a KP worth 10 Dragon Cup points. King Lip is solo 4th on the Dragon Cup points list, with a 1-3 gross-net finish in the B Flight. Carol Lee, on the strength of her 1st low net finish in the B Flight and her KP, is in solo 5th on the points list.
As soon as the last group finished, we walked over to the Vineyard and we were given a tour of the Wente winemaking facility and sampled their estate sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah, appropriately paired with four different h'orderves, in the historic Cave. Tournament Director Alex Chong had the honor of presenting tournament prizes to our gross, net, skins and KP winners. And, we also had a little something special for our brave high gross finisher.

Following the wine tasting, Bobby, Fuzzy, JW and yours truly had a wonderful dinner over at The Restaurant at Wente Vineyard. A most impressive 32-once bone-in rib-eye was the best call of the night. More wine was consumed, more stories and lies were told that shall never leave the room. The merry band of discriminating diners are planning the next Club culinary adventure after San Juan Oaks -- stayed tuned and do join us.
The next stop on the "tour" is the first "major" of the year -- the Tucson Invitational. Nine Dragons will be competing in Arizona. The next Dragons tournament will be at the Fred Couples-designed San Juan Oaks in May.
